Cell Vibro-deformability

چکیده
We newly proposed the "Cell Vibro-Deformability" where cell frequency characteristics is observed by moving a single cell in microchannel periodically, with an assistance of both an online high speed camera and piezoelectric actuator. The developed system composed of a high speed pump, and an online high speed vision, and a microfluidic chip. Through experiments by using red blood cell, we obtained the frequency characteristics for cell shape. An interesting observation is that a red blood cell with normal shape is gradually folded at the entrance of narrow throat as "coffee bean" and eventually results in the shape of "boat shape" irrespective of the frequency between 1 through 20 Hz. Furthermore, the shape of RBC at the exit strongly depends upon the frequency, particularly the length becomes longer when the frequency increases.

Effect of reconstructive vascular surgery on red cell deformability--preliminary results.
Using a simple filtration method, red cell deformability was measured in healthy control subjects and in patients with peripheral vascular disease. Impaired red cell deformability was demonstrated in patients with rest pain or gangrene and in patients with intermittent claudication. An improvement in red cell deformability was demonstrated after successful reconstructive vascular surgery in bot...
متن کاملMeasurement Techniques for Red Blood Cell Deformability: Recent Advances
Human red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes have remarkable deformability. Upon external forces, RBCs undergo large mechanical deformation without rupture, and they restore to original shapes when released. The deformability of RBCs plays crucially important roles in the main function of RBCs oxygen transport through blood circulation. RBCs must withstand large deformations during repeated pas...
متن کاملSeparate mechanisms of deformability loss in ATP-depleted and Ca-loaded erythrocytes.
Membrane rigidity has been widely accepted as the dominant cause of reduced deformability both of ATP-depleted erythrocytes and erythrocytes containing excess calcium (Ca). However, recent studies have shown normal membrane deformability in ATP-depleted erythrocytes. In addition, Ca accumulation causes massive ion and water loss, and it has been shown that extensive dehydration causes an increa...
متن کاملAn experimental study of the impulse response of a vibro-impacting cantilever beam
We consider the dynamics of a vibro-impacting cantilever beam experiment using an impact load cell. The signal recorded from the cell produces spike train type data. We consider the issues related to the analysis of such data, particularly the sampling rate and threshold values. For vibro-impact motion of the beam, we consider the duration of impacts using a time of contact measure. We then dis...
متن کاملComparison of vibro-acoustic stimulation and acupressure effects in nonstress test results and its parameters in pregnant women
BACKGROUND The primary goal of antenatal testing is to identify fetuses at risk of intrauterine neurologic injury or death so that these adverse outcomes can be prevented. We want to assess nonstress test (NST) results and some parameters before and after vibro-acoustic stimulation and acupressure. We did a randomized controlled clinical trial in Shahid-Beheshti Hospital in Isfahan in 2011. M...
